Dandy Lions by Robert Sherer

The Lyman-Eyer Gallery is pleased to present Dandy Lions by Robert Sherer. This unique pyrograph is one of many works which will be showcased this summer at the gallery. Robert muses about these kitsch/nostalgia works..."Like many American boys I grew up in a world of sports, camping, scouting, and war gaming. The secret rites of passage and relationship intrigues played out in the locker rooms, pup tents, and tree houses helped to define me as a man. Because my youth most closely resembles the classic illustrations of camping guide books and scouting manuals of the 1950s and '60s, I have found it necessary to derive my biographical drawings from these visual resource materials. To imbue these wood-burned images with an air of authenticity I render them with actual camp craft materials such as leather, rustic wood, tarpaulin, lanyards and grommets. I am adept with these materials because they were some of my most comforting diversions during those thrilling and perilous years of self discovery. They also provided me with a sense of personal achievement because they earned me merit badges.
It is my hope that these works will help others to reconnect with the springtime of life. The pyrography process..."Because there is no room for erasure or mistakes with these pyrographic artworks I must work out all of the compositional aspects before approaching the actual piece of wood veneer. I create my cartoon drawings on paper and manipulate them on that forgiving surface until I have achieved the exact image I am desiring. I then transfer the drawing onto the wood veneer using standard office-grade carbon paper. The linear information is then ready to be burned into the wood with a camp craft wood-burning tool and the image is colorized with shellacs and wood stains. Sometimes I seal the final picture in a semi-gloss varnish. I find that using traditional camp craft materials and techniques helps to imbue these artworks with an air of authenticity." Action by Campbell Paxton

The Lyman-Eyer Gallery recently participated in the 2nd Annual New England Erotic Arts Festival by hosting our Erotic Arts Exhibition on June 7. The four framed works by Campbell Paxton received many positive comments and high praise for their movement and 'action'. The titles are Involved Figure Study, 69 Back Study, Sexual Wrestlers and Sexual Disentanglement. Each work is a framed wall sculpture hand crafted in polymer clay with a terra cotta finish. Campbell writes of his work..."One theory of style suggests that art is a contest. An artist is always in competition with other artists, with reality, with the challenges presented by subject and the limitations of materials. Most of all he competes with himself. On any given day he can pick his opponents. Mine have ranged from Mannerism to Muybridge, from Classical to Baroque; from wax to bronze to polymer clay. It is a contest for possession. I want to wrest secrets, essential means of expression, from those who came before, and to absorb them so completely that they become an integral part of my own evolving style. I hope my delight and energy in pursuit of victory are evident and that, though I have created works which are traditional, I have not become merely academic." The Lyman-Eyer Gallery is pleased to present Rope by Michael Breyette. This pastel on paper work has just been released today and is hot, hot, hot! Michael conveys this thoughts on this work..."The handsome cowboy wields his rope with a honed skill as the tightly woven braids become an extension of his sinewy forearms and powerful hands. A cowboy with a lasso against a cloudy sky... seemed simply enough. No complicated background, one lone figure, not even much clothing. I did not anticipate the complexity and the tedium involved with rendering rope in pastel. I do much of the work with my fingers, but here I needed to also employ quite a bit of pencil work to get that braided look of rope. Usually areas that need that intricate touch are small, whereas this just seemed to go on for miles."
